What are HOBO NICKELS anyways?

What are Hobo Nickels?

You might be wondering, what are Hobo Nickels anyways? Well, I am going to explain that in as much detail as possible. As Hobo Nickels are a numismatic form of art. These coins are called like that because they were carved out of actual old nickels by hobos on the streets. Some go back as far as the early 1900's! When in 1913, the Buffalo Nickel was debuted by the mint, hobos went quickly to work. Some of the coins that they used for carving were Shield, V(Liberty), Buffalo, and Jefferson Nickels. Why Nickels and not Pennies? Well, this is because they had just the right amount  of surface space to do their own design. Some of the earlier types of Hobo Nickels are quite RARE and fetch a lot of money in coin auctions. Other coins that were used for Hobo Nickel carving were pennies, dimes, quarters, halves, and even dollars.
There are actual Hobo Nickel collectors that are separate from coin collectors too. I am one of the few coin collectors that go crazy over these interesting pieces of art. I mean, it is amazing to see what creative people did with nickels during and after the war. Later on, many good carvers became artists and were paid money for carving custom nickels for others. Now, there are a hand few of Hobo Nickel carvers that are really good. You can even see some of their works on auctions and their own private sites for sale. The technic is almost the same, except they have more modern tools and not like back in the 1920's. Today, you can find the cheapest Hobo nickel for about $30. That will not include a crazy design like some of them have. Some of them can be as much as a few thousand dollars! So, if you want to get into this hobby, you should do it as quickly as possible because less and less of these nickels are available for sale. Honestly, there are not as many of them as you might think.
